Who Is 1199?
WINNING THE HIGHEST JOB STANDARDS
1199SEIU is the fastest-growing, most effective healthcare union in the country. Our over 450,000 members work in every part of the healthcare industry, including hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, and homecare, and have won the very best job standards. 1199 members at Vassar Brothers and Putnam Hospital have fought for and won:
- Strong job protections.
- No-cost education and training opportunities.
- Yearly pension for all 1199 employees at Vassar Brothers and Putnam Hospital
- A voice in care.
- Some of the highest wages in the country, with guaranteed annual raises.
- Excellent benefits, including no-cost healthcare for employees and our families.
- And much more!
A PROUD HISTORY & MISSION
1199 was founded by a group of pharmacists over 80 years ago, and today we represent healthcare workers throughout New York, including Long Island, New Jersey, Maryland, Florida, Massachusetts, and Washington D.C. We’re guided by a mission to achieve quality healthcare for all, and good, secure jobs for those who provide care. Because healthcare is highly regulated, 1199 members are very active in local, state and federal government, standing up for our professions and our patients.
MAKING SURE EVERY VOICE IS HEARD
1199 is a highly democratic union, and members make all the important decisions, including electing union leaders and voting on all contracts. There are also local councils for specific facilities and job classifications to make sure the individual concerns of all members are heard.
LET'S JOIN THEM!
Vassar Brothers and Putnam Hospital, along with many more hospitals throughout the Hudson Valley have joined 1199 for a better future!
How will management react?
HAVING A SAY IN OUR FUTURE
Right now, management controls all the money and power for themselves. Once we form our union, management will have to share decision-making and resources with us, the people actually providing care each and every day. This is a very difficult change for management to accept, and so often they will try to stop us from forming our union. We must stay strong and united, and we will win a voice for better pay, affordable healthcare, retirement security, job protections and education and training opportunities.
PREDICTABLE SCARE TACTICS
Often management will use misinformation, rumors and scare tactics to try to divide and scare us. But time and time again, healthcare workers have shown that when we stand together in courage and unity, management will listen.
More than 450,000 employees, including members in the Vassar Brothers and Putnam Hospital, have stayed strong and voted for 1199SEIU, and more join every year.
WHEN THEY TRY TO STOP US FROM HAVING A VOICE, MANAGEMENT WILL:
- Talk about dues and anything else to take our minds off of our inconsistent raises, poor benefits, and unfair treatment. But we know dues are 2% of our base wages (not including OT or differentials), and we only start paying after we finish negotiating our 1st contract with guaranteed improvements.
- Make promises, ask for a second chance and maybe even improve our benefits. But any improvements management makes will be stripped away unless we win our union and will still leave us far behind what 1199 members of Vassar Brothers and Putnam Hospital have guaranteed.
- Tell us forming our union won’t make a difference. But the members of 1199 have proven time and time again that with a united voice, we can and will win better jobs and better care for our patients. And we know there’s a huge difference between what we have and what 1199 members at Vassar Brothers and Putnam Hospital have guaranteed.
Know Your Rights
It is our legally protected right to speak out publicly and build support for our union. We can talk about our union and exchange information anywhere, anytime, as long as it does not interfere with patient care. It is illegal for management to threaten us, ask us about our union support, or treat us differently in any way for supporting our union.
